In this post we are going to propose a few
remedies to try to stop the hiccups, uncomfortable spasms of the diaphragm that occur when the vagus nerve – which extends from the brain to the abdomen - it is irritating.
The
causes of hiccups can be very diverse, such as, for example,
take soft drinks, eating too much, swallowing too fast, have an attack of laughter or of crying, eating hot food, or exposed to sudden temperature changes.
Usually hiccups
go away by itself
after a few minutes, but to try to stop more quickly we can implement tricks like these:
- Drink slowly a glass of ice water: This may give you a result if we do hold your breath.
- Eat a slice of lemon: in order To improve its taste, you can add a little sugar, and in this way, the body will ‘focus’ on the effect of the acid, which may relieve the hiccups.
- Stretch the diaphragm: To do this, we can inhale slowly air, hold it for about 30 seconds, and afterwards exhale slowly.
- Breathing into a paper bag: to Do so, it increases the level of carbon dioxide in the blood, which causes the hiccups to stop.
- Take a tablespoon of sugar, honey, butter almond, butter or cocoa butter: The sweet taste helps calm down the nerve that causes the hiccups.
- Ears: This is because some branches of the vagus nerve reach the ear, so stimulating it can take away the hiccups, but never introducing anything in its interior, as damage may result.
We hope that these tips help you to end up with the hiccups as quickly as possible. However, if it persists for many hours or even days
, you will have to consult a health care provider to determine the exact cause.
